At this point, Texas isn’t even pretending to be subtle.
Governor Greg Abbott just called a special legislative session to redraw congressional districts—targeting predominantly Black and Brown communities. And within hours, Trump endorsed every Republican running in the state.
That’s not strategy. That’s a straight-up quid pro quo. Trump said, “Help me win Texas,” and Abbott said, “Say less.”
Let’s break it down:
🗳️ What Abbott is doing:
He’s pushing a redistricting plan that cuts into Democratic-leaning areas—aka communities of color—so Republicans can cling to power despite losing popular support. It’s the same tired playbook they’ve used for decades: manipulate the map, silence the vote, and pretend it’s democracy.
📉 Who it hurts:
Black and Brown Texans, who already face voter suppression, under-resourced schools, and neglected infrastructure, are now watching their political power get carved up like a Sweet potato pie.
💡 The context:
Texas’s power grid collapsed in 2021, leaving over 200 people dead during a winter storm.
The state still hasn’t fully weatherized its infrastructure.
Texans pay some of the highest energy bills in the country (U.S. EIA, 2024).
Rural hospitals are closing, teachers are fleeing the profession, and gun violence continues to go unchecked.
Yet somehow, redrawing district lines is the top priority?
Texas has been under Republican control since 1994. That’s over 30 years of leadership, and what do they have to show for it? A fragile electric grid, an overpriced energy market, a public education crisis, and a voter suppression habit they just won’t quit.
Meanwhile, Trump is out here handing out endorsements like expired coupons, and Abbott is bending over backward to deliver the state to him—again. Not for the people. Not for progress. But to maintain power and stay on Trump’s good side.
It's giving desperation. It's giving banana republic energy. It's giving “We can’t win fairly, so let’s cheat.”
And while they’re out here playing chess with our democracy, real people are suffering—especially the communities they’re actively working to silence.
Texas deserves leadership that’s invested in the people, not just the power. We deserve working lights, affordable bills, functioning schools, and fair representation—not this clown show of backroom deals and backdoor maps.
